Comment: i lookin around for some directions to cook a boil-up for my pakeha friends and well mainly myself, and i came across this great site - havent read all but love those kids already! i have been a horsey girl since i was born but wasnt lucky enough to have mini horses i had to ride my dads big ones!! when i was 8 i was lucky enough to get a pony of my own and his name was ringo and my next pony was called cleo. good luck with your horse adventures and let me know if you need any help/advice.vic

Comment: Just to say we are whanau cos our tipuna Mereaina was born in Kawhia before her daughter Rosetta was born there in 1847. (according to her death certificate) Does anyone know the surname Te Rapopo please? - the writing is pen and ink and is illegible at times so we could be mistaken with the spelling, but we are pretty certain.

Comment: Kia ora I was born in Kawhia my parents are Fred & Bessie Porima,went to school there had a great family upbringing. Kawhia is truly a beautiful place untouched by tourism well so far I try and go home every year to see the folks and other whanau always head to the Kawhia fish shop the best fish&chips in the NZ if not the world. Hoping to be at home this Xmas if not would like to go to the Kawhia Kai Festival.Paimarire

Comment: I would like some information on what my name means and why it was handed down from genereation to generation for me? I was told it was handed down from the Chief of my tribe... I'm also looking at getting traditional Maori tattoo's on my arm and would like to get something that represents my family history. Can someone please help??? Comment: Try cooking someone with kumara and puha in a big boil up. Watercess is quite tasty too. However most Maori preferred to cook people in a traditional hangi.

Comment: Honestly guys Kawhia has changed. The beaches are not what they used to be, the town is over populated, the land is being taken advantage of... Along with the genuine good nature of the true Kawhia "locals" and that unique Kawhia environment is slowly fading. However the atmosphere will forever be the same... Cheeky, dark children bombing you off the wharf, unlicensed drivers driving unregistered cars/motorbikes and young teenagers enjoying the slow paced lifestyle of their home.

Comment: Oh!!..my heart mourns for Kawhia. The pakeha are coming from the cities, getting into the council and inflicting their rules, regulations and idea's of how a well organised institution should be run....Kawhia is losing it's spiritual and natural charm. It's becoming a suburb of Auckland.

Comment: Kia ora Kawhia. It has been many years since I have seen Kawhia. I was one of our Weavers who came with some of our overseas vweavers to a Poukai back in 1993. That was a very special trip as I always wanted to know what happen at these gatherings. I thoroughly enjoyed your openess to share information. I have only looked at the Rongoa page as I am interested in doing some rongoa for my legs which have been kinda scarred from Radiation 2 years ago. Comment: I left a comment on here awhile ago saying how Kawhia is not really what it 'used' to be. Coming from a young perspective [young being still having an age in the double digits with a 1 in the front] it soo is not what it used to be. I may be young, but am also old enough to remember that this is not the same town we came home to all those years ago. It used to be one of those towns where the pace of life was so slow that age was absolutely nothing but a number [that being said in a positive way]

Comment: A place where you walked and talked slow because there was no rush to get anywhere in a hurry. Now that the land has been "sub-divided" and "purchased" - I HATE both of those words - The LOCALS have been shifted to a minority and the people with money have changed the lifestyle and scenary completely. Minus the few spots we prefer not to let anyone know about.

Comment: Kawhia is slowly but surely turning into just another hot spot for people who consider money to be power. Worst thing is Kawhia is letting them. Young people notice evrything. They see what you don't. I wish Kawhia was still KAWHIA. One thing it'll always be is home though
